💎 Tiny hidden gems in downtown Boise

Hi, friends!

Just for the fun of it, today’s Weekend Countdown starts with three tiny places downtown that you should know about.

3 tiny downtown Boise gems

The Shop

The tiniest of tiny gems, it is possible to walk past The Shop and miss it. But I’m hoping to make that less likely here, because it’s a delight! Once you know about it, it feels like a portal you’ve unlocked.

The Shop is a new go-to for a quick gift and card, a canned beverage you’ll find on few other shelves (they put me onto the Yuzuco green tea yuzu-ade now popping up everywhere), and quality pantry items. Best of all: Owner Wyatt Courage designs all the amazing cards, through Courage Card Co.

It’s located between Goldy’s Corner and Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro, facing Capitol Boulevard.

Tony’s Pizzeria

Just down the street from The Shop is Tony’s Pizzeria Teatro, a hidden gem I’m always surprised people don’t know about, or have never visited. The restaurant allows room for a walkway and not much more space, and their two-top tables make for a romantic little date spot.

It’s just around the corner from The Egyptian Theatre, so it’s a great dinner before a show, or a dinner after.

Jitters by Jayne

A new-ish coffee shop on 9th Street, this is tucked in a row of places who could fit into the “tiny” category. It’s a young entrepreneurial success story and worth dropping by for a drink, just to try someplace new.

Idaho’s gas prices following western neighbors upward

The thing nobody wants to talk about! But it’s true — while the average gallon of gas in the United States costs $4.44 and rising, Idaho’s is more than 40 cents more expensive right now, sitting at $4.86.

Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada have already topped the $5 mark, and much of southern Idaho has done the same. It seems that amid inflation, the war in Iran, and increased interest rates this week, gas will continue to rise into the autumn.

Abortion ballot initiative fundraising continues

The group behind Proposition 1, the effort to upend Idaho abortion ban, has raised more than three-quarter of a million dollars since the beginning of August, bringing their total cash up to $1.9 million. However, its opposition has just surpassed that number, hitting $2.3 million recently.

According to Boise State Public Radio, these figures haven’t resulted in much spending yet, but that’s likely to change soon ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections.

1 thing giving me hope

Short and sweet: Pride! It hasn’t been an easy couple of years for the LGBTQIA+ community, but the opportunity to gather and celebrate authenticity shouldn’t be taken for granted. Just for fun, here’s a photo from an early 90s Pride celebration in Boise.
