Hi, friends!
There are so many fun things to do in town this weekend, but I’m also getting excited for a few day trip options as the weather cools down starting next week. That’s how our Weekend Countdown starts!
In today's Weekend Countdown:
- 3 hot springs for newbies
- 2 local headlines
- 1 neighborly comfort
3 Idaho hot springs to plan a trip to
The Springs in Idaho City
This is the lowest hanging fruit and most accessible hot springs pool around. The base pay of $30 per person may seem outrageous for people who prefer to go a little more off-grid, but The Springs is a tried and true, especially for folks who are new to Boise and don’t want to drive too far. The $30 gets you two and a half hours of access to the sauna and the pool, where you can order food and drinks.
They also have private pools for adult pairs for one hour. The Springs is open Thursday through Monday, and you’ll want to get a reservation before packing the car.
Gold Fork Hot Springs
Gold Fork takes a couple hours to reach (it’s in the mountains east of Highway 55, just north of Donnelly), but at just $10 (cash only) and a beautiful scene tucked between ridges, it’s worth the effort. The thing that sets Gold Fork apart is that, similar to controlling the flow of hot and cold water with rocks in a river, it has a series of cascading pools that start hot at the top and mellow out on the way down. The choose-your-temp approach makes it pretty friendly for families and kids too
Kirkham Hot Springs
If you weren’t aware there’s a thriving discourse about hot springs etiquette and overuse, now you do, and Kirkham often finds itself at the center of that conversation. It’s unfortunate that erosion and poor conduct at the springs has harmed the site and closed it a couple times in recent years, because it is a stunning place. You can reach it on Highway 21 after passing Lowman.
A note on the hot springs — I tried to find pictures of my visits to these hot springs, but couldn’t find any. Evidence of a good time, I guess? Anyway, I would tell you if I was recommending a place I hadn’t been to!

Timberline High students apply pressure to district in alleged threats case
Timberline High students have walked out of classes this week to call for the Boise School District to hold students accountable who allegedly made threats to a female student in a Snapchat group chat. Some of the students in the chat called for the girl to be raped and killed, according to accounts from other students.
Boise police began investigating the case last Friday. In addition to the walkouts, a change.org petition online calling for the students who allegedly sent the threats to be expelled has received more than 13,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.
The Timberline homecoming football game would have been last night, but the school forfeited and canceled the game. The homecoming dance is continuing as planned, but all other homecoming activities are being postponed.
Ridge to Rivers asks for input
The group that manages the Boise Foothills trails system is asking users to respond to a five-minute survey, which they do regularly to update trail protocol, maintenance, and expansion plans.
1 thing giving me hope: Stoopsitting
Each evening this week, I went for a walk in the West End and found cats, dogs, and humans alike taking in the night. I met several new people and said “hi” to many more. It was simple, but it made me feel hopeful that at a time when our culture feels so tense and defensive, one person’s decision to sit out on their front porch made my own night more friendly and memorable. That’s all!
